Breast Cancer Awareness in Blair County, PA |
A breast cancer walk encouraging screening and early detection |

In Blair County, breast cancer awareness is more than a pink ribbon; it is a neighbor urging another neighbor to pay attention.
That message will move through Altoona on Oct. 11, when the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Central PA walk brings survivors, families and supporters together.
At the heart of the gathering is Jessica King, a Roaring Spring resident who was 40 when she noticed a lump while showering.
King was diagnosed in 2024 with invasive ductal carcinoma that had reached nearby lymph nodes, then underwent chemotherapy, immunotherapy and a double mastectomy.
Her experience is a sobering reminder that a change worth checking should never be brushed aside.
King now leads The Breastie Project, a local effort offering connection and encouragement to people navigating breast cancer treatment.
As walk ambassador, she plans to join family, friends and project members on a route built around support rather than speed.
The breast cancer walk starts at Peoples Natural Gas Field, winds through Lakemont Park past the Leap-The-Dips roller coaster and returns to the ballpark.
Registration is scheduled for 12:30 PM, with the kickoff set for 2 PM on Oct. 11.
Organizers say fundraising helps provide transportation to appointments, wigs and counseling, alongside support for cancer research.
The bigger goal reaches beyond one afternoon: helping more people recognize changes early and seek appropriate care.
Breast cancer screening matters, but the right timing and type of test depend on personal risk and medical guidance.
Residents who notice a new lump or another concerning breast change should contact a health professional rather than wait for a routine screening appointment.
For Blair County families, showing up at the walk can turn fear and isolation into something sturdier: community. |
