Trail Closures Create Frustration for Outdoor Enthusiasts in Blair and Huntingdon Counties

Outdoor enthusiasts eager for spring activities face fresh challenges as two major sections of the popular Lower Trail are now closed across Blair and Huntingdon counties.

Penelec has temporarily shut the southern stretch from Alfarata to Water Street to upgrade electrical lines that run alongside the route.

The closure, aimed at ensuring worker and public safety, is expected to last until at least April.

Further complicating access, the former Water Street Flea Market parking area is no longer available due to new ownership, blocking a key access point for bypassing the closure.

Several birdwatching events for March have already been canceled because of the shutdown.

Meanwhile, the trail remains impassable near Dilling Bridge, still awaiting repairs after last summer’s structural issues.

Officials from Rails to Trails hope to reopen the bridge once water and weather conditions improve.

"Johnstown Christian Students Deliver Hope to Bangladesh in Inspirational Mission"

Nearly 250 students at Johnstown Christian School transformed their gym into a center of giving, spending two hours assembling meal packets for families in Bangladesh.

The urgency is real, as Bangladesh continues to face devastating cyclones and floods, leaving many residents in dire need.

Led by preschool teacher Patti Miller, students worked assembly-line style—scooping, measuring, and sealing meals packed with protein, vegetables, vitamins, and rice.

These nutritious packets, each containing 11 essential vitamins, aim to sustain children and families struggling overseas.

Precision and teamwork powered the goal of creating 10,000 meals, which also anchored the school’s annual spring fundraiser.

This effort raises around $90,000 each year, helping fund scholarships that benefit up to 85% of Johnstown Christian’s students.

Students from kindergarten to senior year joined in, learning firsthand about compassion, leadership, and unity—values celebrated with a community prayer over the completed boxes.

Antis Township Decertifies Pinecroft Volunteer Fire Company Amid Merger Dispute

The Antis Township Board of Supervisors has officially decertified the Pinecroft Volunteer Fire Company, ending its township support and emergency response role as of Tuesday morning.

This decisive step comes after Pinecroft voted against uniting with the Excelsior Fire Department No. 1 of Bellwood, despite years of discussions and a state-led recommendation urging consolidation.

Township officials have pushed for the merger, pointing to shrinking volunteer ranks and rising costs.

Pinecroft members resisted, citing fears of losing their unique identity within the community.

Supervisor George Bell voiced regret, stressing that local residents risk losing critical services in the standoff, even as Excelsior is set to take over all fire and rescue coverage.

This move reflects a growing trend of consolidation as towns seek sustainable, effective emergency response amid tightening resources.

Blair and Centre counties are receiving critical state funding to combat a growing hunger crisis.

Local organizations are among the beneficiaries of a $4.1 million grant program from the Department of Environmental Protection designed to fight food insecurity.

The support comes as food needs escalate, with one in seven Blair County residents considered food insecure and Centre County seeing a sharp 12.8% surge.

Stop Casting Your Net Across the Country When Your Best Customers Live Down the Street

For many entrepreneurs in Blair County, a frustrating truth persists.

Money poured into massive online ad platforms often fails to reach the right people, instead targeting users hundreds of miles away.

Meanwhile, a family right here in Altoona might be searching for a product you offer, completely unaware your business even exists.

This is the fundamental disconnect of modern marketing for small businesses.

A shift toward hyper-local advertising is changing the game by focusing on connecting with neighbors.

This strategy engages households in the immediate community—the very people who become loyal customers and genuinely want to support local.

Your next loyal customer isn't in another time zone; they're right here.

Focusing on neighborhood marketing is more than just a tactic; it's an investment in the vitality of the Pennsylvania local economy.

Stop Guessing: Why Local Newsletters Are the Smartest Ad Spend for Small Business

The days of buying a newspaper ad and just hoping for the best are over.

For local businesses, the era of untrackable “spray and pray” advertising is being replaced by a far more powerful and precise tool: the hyper-local newsletter.

This is a fundamental shift toward connecting with a captive audience that has explicitly asked to receive community news.

When your business appears in a trusted local newsletter, you aren't an interruption; you are part of the conversation.

Unlike traditional media, digital newsletters provide concrete data, allowing you to track exactly how many people opened the email and clicked on your offer.

This data-driven approach delivers a remarkable return on investment, with industry reports showing an average return of $36 for every $1 spent, proving it’s a smarter way to market locally.

New Historical Marker to Spotlight Tragic Legacy of Martinsburg Indian School

A new state historical marker is coming to Blair County to commemorate the short-lived but impactful Martinsburg Indian School.

Operating from 1885 to 1888, the school was part of a brutal federal policy aimed at forcibly assimilating Indigenous children.

Students from the Osage and Oneida Nations were taken from their families and sent to the facility, also known as the Juniata Institute.

Some children had even been transferred from the infamous Carlisle Indian School.

The policy sought to destroy Native culture, a mission that had devastating consequences for those subjected to it.

This dark chapter left a permanent scar on Martinsburg, where two students died during the school’s operation and remain buried in a local cemetery.

The new marker serves as a solemn acknowledgment of this painful and often overlooked piece of local history.

Superloads to Impact Central Pennsylvania Traffic Starting December 8

Windmill superloads are set to move through Central Pennsylvania beginning December 8, likely causing traffic slowdowns across multiple counties.

Massive trucks transporting key components for the Highland North Wind Farm near Beaverdale, Cambria County, will depart Clearfield County starting at 8 a.m., following a route along Interstate 80 and Interstate 99 through Centre and Blair counties, before continuing on U.S. 22 and U.S. 219 into Cambria County.

From December 8 to 10, three separate superloads—each carrying windmill blades—will leave Clearfield County at hourly intervals each morning, moving along the same corridors with final stretches on secondary roads in Cambria County.

Drivers should expect slow-moving convoys and possible delays, especially near exits and smaller roadways.

PennDOT advises motorists to seek alternate routes and stay attentive, making use of 511PA for the latest traffic conditions.
