Blair Buzz Spotlight: Tom & Joe's Restaurant – Where Generations Meet & Eat Since 1933

A Legacy of Flavor and Family

If you're looking for a true taste of Altoona history with a side of hearty home cooking and warm hospitality, pull up a stool at Tom & Joe's Restaurant at 1201 13th Ave. in downtown Altoona. This beloved family-owned diner has been serving Blair County since December 1933, making it a genuine multi-generational mom-and-pop institution that's as much a community gathering spot as it is a restaurant.

A Legacy of Flavor and Family

Founded by brothers Tom and Joe Batrus, the diner has evolved over the decades while staying true to its roots. Tom bought out his brother in the late 1940s, and the business has remained in the family ever since. Today, it's in its third generation under George Jr., continuing the tradition of "Generations Serving Generations." The current building, with its classic knotty pine walls and welcoming counter, dates back to a major rebuild in 1956, with expansions over the years to accommodate more locals and visitors.

Locals and visitors alike rave about the old-school diner atmosphere, the sassy yet friendly service (many staff have been there for years), and the generous portions that keep people coming back. As one reviewer put it, it's a "time warp" in the best possible way—where first-timers are quickly treated like family.

What to Order

Breakfast is served all day (or until they close), and it's the star of the show. Signature favorites include:

  • The Breakfast Mess — Scrambled eggs mixed with home fries and your choice of meats, onions, peppers, and cheese. The "Everything" version is a massive, crowd-pleasing plate.
  • Classic omelets (Greek, Western, Philly Cheesesteak, and more), pancakes, French toast, and specials like creamed chipped beef.
  • For lunch: Meatloaf (their own recipe, no "red stuff" on top!), hot sandwiches with gravy, burgers, cheesesteaks, and daily specials like pork & sauerkraut or roast turkey.

Everything is made with that classic diner touch—reliable, flavorful, and satisfying. Prices are reasonable, portions are huge, and the coffee keeps flowing.

Hours (as of recent info):

  • Monday–Friday: 7 AM – 2 PM
  • Saturday: 7 AM – 1 PM
  • Sunday: 7 AM – Noon

They're open 7 days a week. Call (814) 943-3423, order online for pickup via their site, or check DoorDash. Pro tip: Weekends can get busy, but the wait is worth it!
