Suicide prevention remains a pressing concern in Blair County, where community members continue to rally for change and healing.

This weekend, the "Out of the Darkness" community walk returns to Lakemont Park, drawing families, friends, and advocates determined to break the silence surrounding mental health.

Organizers are emphasizing that every step taken honors lives lost and lifts those struggling in silence.

Attendees can expect a deeply emotional gathering as the Hope Memorial returns, offering a space for remembrance and shared strength.

Local organizations are joining forces, reflecting broad support for suicide prevention across Altoona and throughout Blair County.

Recent years have brought a heightened focus on connecting residents to vital resources — including peer hotlines, counseling options, and crisis support available throughout the region.

Families impacted by suicide often speak of the warmth and solidarity they’ve found at these annual gatherings.

The walk has evolved into more than a fundraiser; it’s now a crucial local tradition, nurturing open conversation and hope.

According to recent reports, annual turnout has steadily grown, a testament to the community’s willingness to confront tough realities and support one another.

Anyone interested in participating or honoring a loved one can consult local advocacy groups for further details.

I worry some people still see it all as a fundraiser and not real action. I hope local leaders follow up with more counseling and crisis help, not just events.

I think it's good there's more talk about resources now. Years ago, nobody talked about any of it. Maybe these walks get people to open up and ask for help. Proud of Blair County for coming together.

It's heartening to see so many gather to remember and raise awareness. My nephew lost his battle a few years back. These walks help remind us we aren't alone in this pain. I pray for everyone still struggling.
