Twenty-one local organizations will share more than $80,000 in new prevention funding aimed at helping Blair County families before problems become crises.

Operation Our Town announced its 2026 grants October 7, continuing a long-running effort to reduce substance abuse and crime through education, mentoring, and practical community support.

The awards demonstrate that prevention can look very different depending on the people being served.

Some grants will support educational opportunities, including assistance for adults pursuing high school equivalency credentials through the Altoona Area School District's adult education program.

Other funding will help Big Brothers Big Sisters of Blair County strengthen relationships between young people and mentors.

The Roaring Spring Community Library will receive support for a teen book club called The Dark Reads Society, combining reading with a welcoming place for students to gather.

The Healing Patch children's grief program will use its grant for supplies that help children and families cope with the death of someone close to them.

NAMI Blair County will expand creative activities intended to encourage family communication and emotional well-being.

Several programs will provide meals, transportation, school supplies, or other essentials that can make participation possible for families facing financial pressure.

The Salvation Army in Altoona is also among the recipients, with funding directed toward assistance for people experiencing homelessness.

Together, the awards reflect a broad view of community safety that includes stable relationships, access to learning, and support during difficult transitions.

Operation Our Town reports distributing more than $1.6 million to local prevention programs over nineteen years.

For residents, the announcement is a reminder that small neighborhood programs can have an impact far beyond their budgets.

Organizations interested in future funding can begin planning for the next application cycle, which is scheduled to open in May 2027.
