Coverage of Blair County baseball and the Curve Classic tournament |
Hollidaysburg's high school baseball team is off to an impressive start this season, showcasing their dominance with a commanding 15-0 win over Penn Cambria in the opening round of the Curve Classic tournament at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
Pitcher Liam Jancula delivered a stellar performance, throwing a four-inning no-hitter without issuing a single walk. Head coach Jon Szynal emphasized the importance of strong starting pitching, noting that their success stems from throwing strikes and minimizing walks, allowing the defense to handle routine plays effectively.
The Golden Tigers' offense was equally formidable. Josh Banks ignited the first inning with a double down the line, followed by Mason Mierley reaching base due to a fielding error. Additional defensive miscues by Penn Cambria contributed to Hollidaysburg's early 4-0 lead.
In the second inning, the Golden Tigers extended their advantage with four more runs, highlighted by doubles from Donald Miller and Braden Hatch. Coach Szynal praised the team's disciplined approach at the plate, emphasizing their selectivity and ability to capitalize on favorable pitches.
Despite two errors by Hollidaysburg in the bottom of the second, Jancula maintained composure, escaping the inning unscathed with a pop-out and a strikeout. The Golden Tigers continued to pile on runs, adding one in the third and six in the fourth, sealing the decisive victory.
Coach Szynal commended his players for their hard work and team-first mentality, acknowledging the challenging schedule ahead and expressing confidence in the team's potential.
Penn Cambria, now 1-5, will face Bishop Guilfoyle Academy in the consolation round, while Hollidaysburg advances to the semifinals against Tyrone. Coach Szynal emphasized the importance of putting the ball in play, noting that doing so often leads to positive outcomes.
The Curve Classic tournament continues to be a highlight of Blair County's high school baseball scene, providing teams with the opportunity to compete at a high level and showcase their talents. |
