A Mother’s Legacy: How This Local Foundation Helps Blair County Kids Thrive |
For over 25 years, the Gloria Gates Memorial Foundation has provided a vital lifeline for local children through free afterschool programs. Now, a 90s tribute concert aims to fuel its future. |
A legacy of compassion that started in an Altoona housing community continues to change lives across Blair County.
For more than a quarter-century, the Gloria Gates Memorial Foundation has been a quiet force for good, providing a safe and nurturing space for children after the school bell rings.
The foundation’s work is a living tribute to its namesake, Gloria Gates, a woman remembered for her open door and generous heart toward neighborhood kids in Evergreen Manor.
Her son, Dr. Donald Gates, established the organization to ensure that spirit of support would endure.
It's a mission that has touched the lives of nearly 1,000 children to date.
Currently operating three afterschool sites, the foundation has its sights set on opening a fourth, expanding its reach even further.
The programs are completely free and designed to address the needs of the whole child.
Kids receive crucial homework assistance, healthy snacks with a focus on nutrition, and character-building lessons.
A unique element is the focus on financial literacy, where children earn play money for participating, learning valuable lessons about saving and spending responsibly.
This structured support system provides stability and encouragement that can shape a child’s future.
Now, the community has a fun way to help this incredible work continue.
The foundation is teaming up with P&J Productions for a special fundraising event: The 9-TEEZ, a high-energy 90s tribute concert.
The show promises a nostalgic journey through the sounds of grunge, pop, and R&B.
Set to take the stage at the historic Mishler Theatre on Friday, January 16, the concert will feature a lineup of beloved local performers.
Performers include Tyler Bollman, Megan Helbig, Will Jones, Margot Masucci, and Michael Wertz, with a special appearance by the Blair Dance Academy.
Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show are just $15, plus box office fees, offering an affordable night out for a powerful cause.
By attending, residents can directly support the afterschool programs that are essential for so many Altoona families.
It’s more than a concert; it's an investment in the next generation of Blair County. |
