Community Gathers to Celebrate “Mac’s Bash” and Empower Future Scholars |
Annual fundraiser continues the legacy of late Altoona councilman Dick McEldowney through student scholarships |
BLAIR COUNTY, Pa. — The 23rd annual Mac’s Bash brought the community together Friday night, March 13, at the Blair County Convention Center to celebrate education, community spirit, and the enduring legacy of Dick “Mac” McEldowney. The sold-out event once again served as the chief fundraiser for the McEldowney Academic Scholarship Fund, which supports high school seniors across Blair County as they pursue higher education or vocational training. Since its start, the program has awarded nearly $500,000 to hundreds of students, keeping McEldowney’s lifelong commitment to service alive. McEldowney, who served on Altoona City Council in the 1980s, was known for his devotion to youth and education. Today, that spirit continues through the dedication of community volunteers and supporters. Mike McDonough, president of the scholarship fund, said that about $27,000 is distributed annually among all eight county high schools, as well as local technical institutions. “This is what it’s all about—helping our young people take the next step, whether that’s college or trade school,” he said. Through Mac’s Bash, one man’s legacy continues to open doors for Blair County’s next generation. |
