New K-9 Aron Joins Blair County, PA Sheriff's Office |
Military veteran police dog begins explosives detection and apprehension duties |

A four-legged military veteran is beginning a new chapter of public service in Blair County.
The Sheriff's Office recently welcomed K-9 Aron, a six-year-old Dutch shepherd with previous service in the United States military.
Aron is partnered with Sergeant Justin Bennett and is now assigned to work from the courthouse office in Hollidaysburg.
The addition comes after the loss of K-9 Rik, an eleven-year-old explosives detection dog whose sudden death left a difficult gap for the department and his handler.
Rather than simply replacing a beloved partner, Aron's arrival begins a new working relationship built on specialized training and trust.
The new dog has two important responsibilities: locating potential explosive threats and assisting with criminal apprehension when necessary.
That dual-purpose role can support security at public events, businesses, schools, and other locations where specialized canine assistance is requested.
Sergeant Bennett and Aron completed intensive training during July and August and earned the certifications needed for operational work.
A police dog depends on careful communication with its handler, and that teamwork takes repeated practice under a range of conditions.
The dog's military experience provides a foundation, while local training prepares the team for the distinct demands of serving Blair County residents.
Canine programs also require ongoing funding for veterinary care, protective equipment, transportation, and continuing education.
Community donations and fundraising help support those needs, giving residents a way to recognize the work of these specialized teams.
As Aron settles into his assignment, the Sheriff's Office is honoring Rik's legacy while investing in another resource for local public safety.
Residents may see the new K-9 team around Hollidaysburg and at county assignments as their service continues. |
