Local Wrestlers Shine at PIAA Championships as Seven Claim State Gold |
Undefeated Bishop McCort star Bo Bassett caps historic career with dominant final and Most Outstanding Wrestler honors. |
Thirteen local wrestlers stepped onto the mats at the GIANT Center on Saturday with hopes of leaving as state champions. By the end of the day, seven of them had accomplished that goal, bringing home gold medals from the PIAA Wrestling Championships. The spotlight was firmly on the final bout of the night, where Bishop McCort standout Bo Bassett faced Pennsylvania’s all-time wins leader, Brandt Harer. Bassett wasted little time taking control of the match, jumping out to an early lead in the opening period. In the second, he executed a perfectly timed fireman’s carry that set up a decisive pin. The victory not only secured the state title but also earned Bassett the Class AA Most Outstanding Wrestler award. “We talk about these moments our entire career, and they don’t come around very often,” Bassett said. “Today was the last time it would happen for me in high school and probably the last time I’ll wrestle at the GIANT Center. If I was going to get the fall, it was going to be today.” With the win, Bassett closed out his high school career with a remarkable 170–0 record and three PIAA state titles. The Virginia Tech commit also finishes with the most wins in PIAA history by an undefeated wrestler. “It’s the end of this chapter, but the beginning of another,” Bassett said. “I’m excited to see what God has planned next.” |
