Penn Highlands Community College weighs Blair County, PA center move |
Penn Highlands Blair Center may leave Logan Valley Mall |

For students who count on a familiar place to take classes in Blair County, a possible move by Penn Highlands Community College raises a practical question: where would they go next?
The college is weighing the future of its Penn Highlands Blair Center as its lease at Logan Valley Mall approaches a December 2027 expiration.
No decision to leave has been made.
College leaders say they value the current location, but they also want a workable alternative if renewing the lease does not make sense.
A $1.9 million state allocation could help cover a lease and prepare a new Blair County facility if the center relocates.
The money is not a payout for simply considering a move; if Penn Highlands stays at the mall, that funding would not be released for relocation.
That distinction matters in a community where questions about the mall’s condition and long-term future have lingered.
For students, the stakes are less about real estate than access to classes, services and a location that fits everyday routines.
A center that works for commuters can make the difference between continuing a program and putting college on hold.
At the same time, the college has reason to avoid rushing away from a site it still finds useful.
The discussion in Blair County comes as Penn Highlands reassesses space elsewhere in its service area.
Its culinary program recently moved to the Frank J. Pasquerilla Conference Center in Johnstown after outgrowing its previous location.
The college has also considered whether its Ebensburg Center might eventually need less space as more students choose online courses.
Neither example settles what will happen at Logan Valley Mall, where a lease renewal remains possible.
Still, uncertainty has a cost when students and instructors need dependable places to plan their next semester.
For now, the state allocation gives Penn Highlands an option rather than an instruction to move.
The next test is whether the mall can remain a reliable home for the Blair Center beyond 2027. |
