# Current outdoor trends in Blair County Based on 2026 county announcements, state recreation planning, and Blair County tourism sources, these are the five strongest current outdoor trends. The ranking reflects momentum, investment, visitor appeal, and relevance to Blair County—not a formal countywide participation survey. ## 1. Coordinated investment in trails and parks Blair County’s creation of the Trail, Park and Recreation Authority is the clearest new trend, signaling a shift toward professionally coordinated outdoor-recreation development. The authority is intended to connect and improve trails, parks, waterways, active-transportation routes, and potential ATV infrastructure across the county. County commissioners allocated approximately $72,710 to help launch the authority, with additional funding anticipated in the 2026 budget.(https://www.blaircountypa.gov/getmedia/a79fdd0e-affc-4a82-acb7-102edef0fdaf/20251009-Agenda.pdf) ## 2. Connected multi-use trail systems Trail connectivity is becoming more important than isolated parks or short paths, particularly through links between the Lower Trail, Canoe Creek State Park, regional waterways, and neighboring counties. Pennsylvania’s latest outdoor-recreation plan identifies community and regional trail systems as the state’s highest facility-investment priority, while the Canoe Creek connector demonstrates how Blair County fits into that larger strategy. This trend supports walking, biking, cross-country skiing, wildlife viewing, and car-free access between communities and attractions. **Source URLs:(https://www.discoverblaircounty.com/explore/history-museums/) ## 3. Growth of hiking, rail-trail biking, and gravel cycling Hiking and cycling are likely to remain Blair County’s largest-volume outdoor activities because the county offers accessible rail trails, mountain terrain, rural roads, and state-park paths. The Lower Trail provides roughly 16.5 miles of relatively flat, multi-use trail along the Juniata River, making it well suited to recreational biking, walking, birding, photography, and winter activities. Statewide survey data reinforces the trend: walking/running and hiking/backpacking were the two most common outdoor activities, while cycling—including rail-trail, gravel, and road riding—was also among the leading activities. (https://www.visitcentralpa.org/things-to-do/outdoor-recreation/) ## 4. Water-based recreation and nature experiences Paddling, fishing, wildlife watching, and waterfront recreation are growing components of Blair County’s outdoor identity, especially around Canoe Creek Lake and the Juniata-area waterways. Canoe Creek State Park already supports boating, fishing, hiking, wildlife watching, accessible recreation, and outdoor education, while the county’s tourism materials promote paddling and regional water-trail systems. This trend is attractive because it broadens the county’s outdoor market beyond mountain hiking and can appeal to families, beginners, anglers, photographers, and visitors seeking lower-intensity recreation. Four-season outdoor stays and programmed recreation Blair County is increasingly positioned as a four-season destination rather than a summer-only recreation market, with hiking, biking, fishing, swimming, hunting, skiing, snowshoeing, and winter recreation spread across its parks and mountain areas. Canoe Creek State Park offers overnight facilities, reservations, guided programs, outdoor education, and year-round park access, while nearby Blue Knob State Park promotes year-round wilderness adventures and overnight stays. Pennsylvania’s broader move toward reservation-based camping and glamping also suggests an opportunity for Blair County businesses to develop cabins, upgraded campsites, beginner-friendly stays, and bundled outdoor weekends. (https://www.pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/glamping) ## Bottom line The strongest opportunity is the combination of **trail connectivity, coordinated county investment, and year-round visitor experiences**. Blair County already has the core assets—mountains, rail trails, parks, waterways, and historic communities—and the current trend is toward linking those assets into a more organized, accessible, and economically valuable outdoor-recreation system. |
