The Claysburg-Kimmel School Board has unanimously agreed to seek the Public School Facility Improvement Grant, aiming to secure up to $5 million to repair and replace roofing at both district schools.
This grant, managed by Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development, requires a 25% local funding match.
If awarded, the funds would cover a complete elementary school roof replacement and partial high school repairs, addressing urgent needs identified by McClure Co.'s recent energy assessment.
Grant decisions are expected in fall 2026, with roofing projects set for summer 2027.
The district also added 10 new AEDs, improved middle school curriculum, and received updates on STEM initiatives.
Key personnel changes were approved, cafeteria staffing was bolstered, and technology upgrades—including enhanced firewalls—were discussed.
The next board meeting happens April 8 at 7 p.m. in the senior high meeting room. Read More... |

Nearly 250 students at Johnstown Christian School transformed their gym into a center of giving, spending two hours assembling meal packets for families in Bangladesh. The urgency is real, as Bangladesh continues to face devastating cyclones and floods, leaving many residents in dire need. Led by preschool teacher Patti Miller, students worked assembly-line style—scooping, measuring, and sealing meals packed with protein, vegetables, vitamins, and rice. These nutritious packets, each containing 11 essential vitamins, aim to sustain children and families struggling overseas. Precision and teamwork powered the goal of creating 10,000 meals, which also anchored the school’s annual spring fundraiser. This effort raises around $90,000 each year, helping fund scholarships that benefit up to 85% of Johnstown Christian’s students. Students from kindergarten to senior year joined in, learning firsthand about compassion, leadership, and unity—values celebrated with a community prayer over the completed boxes. Read More... |
The Hollidaysburg Golden Tigers opened their home baseball season with a dominant 9-4 triumph over the Philipsburg-Osceola Mountaineers.
This impressive win was especially meaningful, coming after an earlier 13-5 loss to the same team.
Mason Mierley delivered a standout performance, collecting two hits, scoring twice, and driving in two runs with a career-best double.
Nathan Phillips bolstered the offense, crossing the plate three times as the Golden Tigers seized control.
Both squads are preparing for matchups with Bald Eagle Area, with Hollidaysburg visiting Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Philipsburg-Osceola traveling Monday at the same time.
These early-season contests could prove crucial for teams aiming to build momentum and excite local fans. Read More... |

It is an exciting season for Blair County! From Bellwood to Tyrone, we are seeing a wonderful mix of new faces and familiar names expanding their horizons. Here are two standout local businesses making waves this March and April. SpeedPro of Central PA (Bellwood)If you’ve noticed some extra-vibrant color while driving through Bellwood lately, you can thank Sara and Jake Bilthuis. The local couple recently opened SpeedPro of Central PA at 526 N. Fourth St., Suite 1, bringing a high-end large-format printing studio to our backyard. Whether it’s a full car wrap for a local fleet or a massive wall mural for a new office, the Bilthuises are focused on helping other Blair County businesses "think big." Sara and Jake are deeply rooted in the community and saw a specific need for professional-grade, high-resolution graphics that help local brands stand out. "We wanted to create a space where local business owners could truly bring their vision to life on a large scale," Sara shared. "Blair County has such a strong entrepreneurial spirit, and we’re here to provide the visual tools to match that energy." Their studio is already becoming a go-to for indoor and outdoor signage, trade show displays, and custom decals.
DG Market (Tyrone)While many of us are used to a quick trip to the "Dollar Store," the north end of the county is getting a major upgrade this spring. A brand-new DG Market is nearing completion at 5495 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd. in Tyrone. Unlike a standard location, this "market" format is specifically designed to tackle "food deserts" by offering expanded fresh produce, refrigerated and frozen foods, and even a selection of fresh meats. The project is bringing about 15 new jobs to the Tyrone area, but more importantly, it's providing a closer grocery option for residents along the Pleasant Valley corridor. A representative for the project noted that they chose this location to fill a gap for residents who previously had to drive into Altoona or downtown Tyrone for fresh essentials. "Our goal is to be more than just a convenience stop; we want to be a reliable source for a healthy dinner on the way home," the company stated regarding the expansion.

Here is Frank the Tank.
We have a polar bear up for adoption... just kidding. It's just Frank the Tank! He is a handsome, big, floofy guy that's about a year old. He's a Great Pyrenees. He's quite stubborn, like when it's time to go inside. He uses his weight to his advantage. He plays well with dogs, can live with cats, and can live with kids. Please know he will leave a large trail of hair wherever he goes. You should also carry a lint roller if you adopt him.
** Frank The Tank is in our care in Altoona PA. He is available for adoption. Each animal gets microchipped, spayed/neutered, 4DX tested (if over 6 months of age), flea treated, and vaccinated. The adoption fee covers those costs. Adoption fees are listed on the application. An application must be filled out in order to visit with any dog or cat. They can be found on our website www.centralpahumane.org under the "Adopt A Pet" tab, then "Adoption." Scroll down and under number 2 you will see dog adoption application. Do not click on "browse our pets." Applications are also available at the shelter. Our animals are posted on Facebook and Petfinder when time permits. A Petfinder inquiry is not an application, and they may not be responded to. We can only accept so many applications for each animal. We do adopt out of state, but we cannot hold the animal. PA Kennel License #1333 Please give Frank the forever home he deserves! |
