Altoona Library’s Fall Book Sale Brings Bargains—and a $5 Bag Day |
Shop October 30–31 and November 2 while supporting the Altoona Area Public Library. |

Blair County readers can stock their shelves and support a familiar community resource when the Friends of the Altoona Area Public Library hold their fall used book sale later this month.
The sale brings together books, puzzles, movies and other secondhand finds, with all money raised benefiting the library.
For anyone hoping to build a winter reading pile, it is a useful opportunity to browse locally before the holiday rush.
Four dates to put on the calendar
Public shopping begins Friday, October 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed by Saturday, October 31, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The final session is Monday, November 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., when the sale switches to its $5-per-bag format.
There are no Sunday sale hours, so readers planning a weekend visit should make Saturday their target.
Friends members have a separate preview Thursday, October 29, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
The sale takes place on the ground floor of the library at 1600 Fifth Avenue in Altoona.
More than a table of novels
The advertised selection includes adult fiction, children’s books, bestsellers and classics, alongside nonfiction covering subjects such as history, travel, crafts, science, genealogy and home repair.
Puzzles, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, patterns and games are also part of the announced mix.
That variety makes this an outing for households with different interests, rather than an errand only for the most dedicated novel reader.
A parent might look for bedtime stories while another family member browses hobby books or a puzzle for a quiet evening.
As with any used sale, the appeal is discovery; a particular title or edition should never be assumed available.
Bring the right payment
Payment is cash or check only, an important detail for shoppers accustomed to tapping a phone or handing over a card.
Decide on a spending limit before browsing, and leave enough time to check condition, look for missing pieces where possible and compare a few choices.
For books intended as gifts, take a moment to check for inscriptions, markings or wear that could matter to the recipient.
Families can make the visit more engaging by letting each child choose a subject, then looking together for a book that fits.
If you are shopping for someone else, a short list of favorite authors or interests can help keep a tempting pile manageable.
A practical way to support the library
The fundraiser gives residents a direct, modest way to help a local institution while taking something useful home.
Buying secondhand also gives books and entertainment materials another turn in someone’s household instead of leaving them unused on a shelf.
The Monday bag sale may appeal especially to readers who enjoy trying unfamiliar authors without making each selection a major purchase.
Earlier shopping sessions offer a different advantage: a chance to browse before the final clearance day, though no specific selection is guaranteed.
Choose the session that matches your schedule and budget rather than counting on a particular item remaining until Monday.
Before leaving home, check the library calendar for any updates and confirm questions about the members’ preview directly with library staff.
Bring cash or a check, invite another reader and give yourself permission to leave with one unexpected find.
The payoff is simple: fresh reading for your household and a little extra support for Altoona’s library.

Does anyone know whether the Friends preview usually has the children’s books out too? I would like to look for a few bedtime stories.
I nearly forgot the sale is cash or check only. That is worth remembering before making the trip to Fifth Avenue.
My kids always head for the puzzles before they look at books. We have found some good ones at the library sale over the years.
The $5 bag sale on Monday sounds like a good deal. I do wish there were Sunday hours for those of us who work Saturdays.
Supporting the Altoona library while finding a few books for winter is a lovely way to spend an afternoon. I hope the fall sale does well.
