A new warehouse is giving the Blair County Food Drive room to organize donations as its annual campaign gets underway.

The drive began October 30 and continues through November 8, offering residents several opportunities to help neighbors facing food insecurity.

Donations can be dropped off at Altoona Sam’s Club throughout the drive.

Collection efforts at the Altoona and Duncansville Walmart stores are scheduled for November 2 through November 8.

The expanded storage space represents a significant change for the organization, which previously relied on a school cafeteria for sorting and distribution.

That temporary arrangement required volunteers to finish a demanding cleanup immediately after the drive, sometimes late into the night.

With a dedicated warehouse, trucks can be unloaded during the week and contributions sorted without the same tight deadline.

Participating nonprofit organizations can also collect supplies over a longer period rather than all at once.

Founder Denice Stone has described the additional space as a practical way to improve the operation for volunteers and recipient groups.

Organizers are still working on improvements to the facility, including refrigeration, a bathroom and shelving adjustments.

Those upgrades remain future goals, but the new space is already helping the current collection effort.

The drive has grown dramatically from its beginnings serving just over 60 people, and organizers say its reach now exceeds 100,000 people.

That scale makes the community’s continuing generosity especially important as families prepare for colder weather and holiday expenses.

WTAJ personnel are expected to participate in the drive on November 4 and 5.

For Blair County residents looking for a direct way to help, donating food during the collection window is one concrete step.

The expanded warehouse should also make it easier for local organizations to move donated food to people who need it.

As this year's campaign continues, the focus remains on filling shelves and strengthening a community network built around helping neighbors.

If you're shopping at the Duncansville Walmart, collections start November 2. Picking up a few extra pantry items while you're there is an easy way to help.

I helped with a collection years ago, and the cleanup was the hardest part. Being able to unload trucks throughout the week sounds like a welcome change.

I wonder if the warehouse will have refrigeration before next year's drive. That could give the participating groups more options when they pick up food.

Reaching more than 100,000 people is impressive, but it also shows how many neighbors need help. I hope the drive can keep up as winter gets closer.

A dedicated warehouse should make a real difference for the volunteers who used to sort donations in a school cafeteria. Their time and effort deserve our thanks.
