A holiday tradition connecting local law enforcement with children is growing in Blair County this year.

The Shop With a Cop program is adding a second Walmart location in Duncansville as organizers prepare for its third year.

The goal is to sponsor 300 children through the upcoming holiday shopping events.

The program gives children a chance to shop alongside law enforcement officers while receiving support during the holiday season.

Beyond the purchases, organizers emphasize the importance of building positive relationships between young people and the officers who serve their communities.

The expansion reflects two years of community and corporate support for the initiative.

Blair County Sheriff James Ott has praised that support and the willingness of local residents and businesses to participate.

Organizers are currently seeking donations of $150 per child to fund the shopping experience.

Residents who wish to sponsor a child can call 814-693-2526 or 814-254-7151 for details.

Online contributions are also accepted through Central Pennsylvania Gives by selecting the Blair County Shop with a Cop Fund.

Checks payable to Blair County Shop with a Cop – CPCF can be mailed to 1616 East Pleasant Valley Boulevard in Altoona.

Adding the Duncansville location marks a new chapter for an effort designed to reach more families.

For children, the shopping events offer an opportunity to meet officers in a friendly setting outside of emergencies or routine enforcement.

For participating officers, the program creates time for conversation and shared experiences with young residents.

Local businesses and individual donors can help turn those encounters into lasting holiday memories.

As the season approaches, the organizers' immediate challenge is securing enough sponsorships to reach the 300-child goal.

The initiative shows how Blair County residents can work together to make the holidays brighter while strengthening community connections.

My grandson was nervous around officers until one took time to talk with him at a community event. That friendly time together can mean a great deal to a child.

I would like to know how children are chosen for Shop With a Cop. There may be families who could use the help but do not know how to ask.

The Duncansville location should help reach more families. Still, raising $150 for each of 300 children is a big task, and I hope organizers keep everyone updated on their progress.

Giving 300 Blair County children a chance to shop with an officer is a wonderful goal. I hope our community comes together to make it happen.
