Veterans Day 2026 in Blair County: Honoring Our Hometown Heroes Across the County |
Veterans Day history, the Altoona parade, Hollidaysburg events and ways to honor veterans throughout Blair County |

Every November 11, Americans recognize the courage and sacrifices of the men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces.
Veterans Day falls on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, giving residents throughout Blair County a chance to thank local veterans and reflect on generations of service.
From Altoona and Hollidaysburg to Tyrone, Bellwood, Williamsburg, Martinsburg, Roaring Spring, Duncansville and Claysburg, military families are part of the county's shared history.
As the nation marks its 250th anniversary, Veterans Day is an especially meaningful moment to reflect on service and sacrifice.
How Veterans Day Began
The November 11 date commemorates the 1918 armistice that stopped fighting in World War I at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
President Woodrow Wilson first observed Armistice Day in 1919, and Congress made November 11 a federal holiday in 1938.
In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation renaming it Veterans Day to honor Americans who served in all wars.
The observance returned permanently to November 11 in 1978 after a brief period when it was marked in October.
Veterans Day recognizes all who served, in war or peace. Memorial Day specifically remembers those who died while serving.

Blair County's Military Heritage
Robert E. Laws Veterans Mall in downtown Altoona provides a public setting for reflection and the ceremony following the annual Veterans Day Parade.
The Blair County War Veterans Council organizes that parade, a visible tradition that brings veterans, families and community organizations together.
In Hollidaysburg, Tyrone and communities across the county, veterans organizations and local memorials help preserve the stories of those who served.
Veterans also continue serving their neighbors as educators, first responders, business owners, volunteers and civic leaders.

How to Honor Veterans Across the County
Readers in Tyrone, Bellwood, Williamsburg, Martinsburg, Roaring Spring, Duncansville, Claysburg and surrounding townships can visit local memorials, contact local American Legion or VFW posts about observances, and thank veterans in their communities.
No separate November 11 public ceremonies were verified for these communities at the time of writing; readers should check borough offices and local veterans organizations for late announcements.
A visit, a handwritten note, a conversation about a family member's service, or support for a veteran-owned business can all make the day meaningful.
Behind every uniform is a story of courage, family and service.
To every veteran throughout Blair County and across our nation: Thank you for your service. |
