The Friends of the Altoona Area Public Library are bringing back their fall used book sale, giving Blair County readers a chance to find affordable entertainment while supporting the library. Public shopping runs Friday, October 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, October 31, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on the ground floor at 1600 Fifth Avenue in Altoona. There are no Sunday sale hours.

The final session is Monday, November 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., featuring the $5-per-bag sale. Friends members also have a preview Thursday, October 29, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The announced selection goes beyond novels, with children’s books, nonfiction, puzzles, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, patterns and games among the offerings. Particular titles and quantities will depend on what remains available.

Bring cash or a check; card payment is not listed as an option. All money raised benefits the library, making this a practical way to refresh your reading pile and help a community resource. Check the library’s current event details before heading out, and consider bringing a list of authors, hobbies or children’s interests to guide your browsing. A little planning can help turn a quick shopping trip into a useful winter stock-up.

Tyrone’s Chocolate Harvest Festival is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., bringing a sweet theme to a day of downtown shopping. The Tyrone Area Chamber of Commerce calendar lists Tenth Street as the location. The county tourism calendar identifies Gardners Candies and Tyrone Events & Promotions as partners and describes treats, candy, baked goods, food, handcrafted items and other vendors.

The festival fits a town with a longstanding candy-making identity. Gardners traces its start to 1897, when sixteen-year-old James “Pike” Gardner opened a small candy store in downtown Tyrone. The company still identifies the town as home to its flagship store and corporate operation. That connection makes the event a chance to explore a local business story as well as a seasonal marketplace.

Before traveling, check the organizers’ latest announcements for admission information, parking, accessibility and any weather-related changes. A complete vendor roster and detailed activity schedule were not established in the information reviewed, so avoid counting on a specific attraction. Set a shopping budget, dress for November weather and ask vendors directly about ingredients if food allergies matter to your family. Consider leaving time to browse nearby downtown businesses, too. It is a simple opportunity to enjoy northern Blair County and turn a Saturday outing into a little local support.

Altoona’s Veterans Day Parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 11, hosted by the Blair County War Veterans Council. The city lists a route beginning at Eighth Avenue and Seventeenth Street, continuing to Twelfth Avenue and Twelfth Street, then proceeding to Eleventh Avenue and Sixteenth Street. Residents should review the current city notice when choosing a viewing spot and check for updates before heading downtown.

A ceremony will follow at Robert E. Laws Veterans Mall, Eleventh Avenue and Fourteenth Street. The city does not list a separate ceremony start time, so anyone hoping to attend both portions should plan around the parade’s conclusion. Organizations interested in entering the parade, or residents seeking more information, can contact Michael McDonough at 814-329-8472 to ask about arrangements and requirements.

The morning offers Blair County families a chance to recognize veterans together and explain the meaning of November 11 to younger generations. Veterans Day grew from the World War I armistice observance and was renamed in 1954 to honor American veterans of all wars. Dress for the forecast, allow time for parking and walking, and plan ahead for any mobility needs. Whether you watch the parade, attend the ceremony or reach out personally to a veteran, the purpose is the same: make appreciation visible and meaningful.
