World’s Largest Operating Steam Locomotive, Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014, Coming to Altoona This Summer

Historic Big Boy to Visit Railroad City and Climb Legendary Horseshoe Curve July 8–11 as Part of America’s 250th Anniversary Celebrations

The Railroaders Memorial Museum, in partnership with Discover Blair County, announced Tuesday that the world’s largest operating steam locomotive will make a special stop in Altoona this July.

Union Pacific’s legendary Big Boy No. 4014 will visit Altoona from July 8 through July 11 during its first-ever East Coast tour. The journey is part of nationwide celebrations marking America’s 250th anniversary, with the massive locomotive scheduled to appear at major events across several states and Philadelphia’s Fourth of July festivities.

Altoona — long known as the “Railroad City” and home to the world-famous Horseshoe Curve — is ideally positioned to host this engineering marvel. The Big Boy is expected to arrive on the evening of July 8, with public and private viewing opportunities available through July 11. On its final day in the area, the locomotive will depart Altoona and make the iconic climb up the Horseshoe Curve.

“To see Big Boy No. 4014 come through Altoona and traverse the Horseshoe Curve is something no one has ever experienced before,” said Joe DeFrancesco, Executive Director of the Railroaders Memorial Museum & Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness two of the greatest engineering achievements in American railroad history come together in one unforgettable moment.”

Local organizers anticipate strong regional interest and significant visitor turnout for the event. Final details regarding public viewing times, ticketing, exact schedules, and additional community events are still being finalized in coordination with Union Pacific and will be announced soon.

“Union Pacific’s Big Boy coming to Blair County is more than a historic rail event; it’s a unique opportunity to welcome visitors from across the country and showcase what makes Blair County such a vibrant destination,” said Morgan Koziar, Director of Marketing and Operations for Discover Blair County. “As thousands visit our region, we’re excited to highlight our rich heritage, support local businesses, and show visitors that Blair County is not just a place to pass through, but a place worth exploring. We encourage everyone to plan in advance and book hotel stays and restaurant reservations now as our community prepares for this extraordinary week.”

Those interested in attending are encouraged to watch for upcoming announcements about official schedules, viewing options, and special events.
