District 6 Class 3A basketball title and Forest Hills basketball rivalry highlighted |
In a thrilling showdown at the Mount Aloysius College Athletic and Convention Complex, the Bishop Guilfoyle Marauders clinched the District 6 Class 3A boys' basketball championship with a decisive 74-54 victory over their long-time rivals, the Forest Hills Rangers.
This triumph was particularly sweet for the Marauders, who had previously fallen to Forest Hills in both last season's district final and the recent Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference title game. Trailing by a single point at halftime, 33-32, Bishop Guilfoyle unleashed a dominant second half, outscoring the Rangers 42-21 to secure the win.
Senior Taurean Consiglio led the charge with 19 points, expressing relief at breaking what he referred to as a district championship "curse." Fellow senior Tyson Lestochi added 18 points, emphasizing the team's offensive execution in the latter half. Sophomore Alex Krimmel contributed a team-high 20 points, showcasing the depth of talent on the Marauders' roster.
The Marauders' sharpshooting was on full display, converting 12 of 19 attempts from beyond the arc. Krimmel, Lestochi, and Consiglio each hit multiple three-pointers, underscoring the team's offensive prowess.
On the opposing side, Forest Hills' standout forward Dylan Stohon delivered a game-high 27 points. Despite his efforts, the Rangers struggled to find additional scoring support, with no other player reaching double figures.
Reflecting on the victory, Bishop Guilfoyle's head coach Ryan Lestochi highlighted the significance of this championship for the senior class, marking their first district title. The win not only avenges previous losses but also sets a promising tone as the Marauders prepare to host Ligonier Valley in the opening round of the PIAA state tournament.
This championship game not only showcased the talent and determination of both teams but also added another compelling chapter to the storied rivalry between Bishop Guilfoyle and Forest Hills in Blair County's basketball history. |
