FedEx has confirmed plans to shut down two Central Pennsylvania shipping facilities as part of a broader restructuring effort across its delivery network.
The company previously filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania announcing the closure of its Pittston facility in Luzerne County. That location is scheduled to close on May 2 and will impact 63 employees.
In addition, FedEx notified residents and customers in the region that its distribution centers along Route 764 in Duncansville and Fox Hill Road in State College will close shortly after, with both locations expected to shut down on May 4.
In a statement provided to WTAJ, a FedEx spokesperson said the decision is tied to the company’s long-term transformation plan known as “Network 2.0.”
“As part of our previously announced network transformation strategy, the FedEx facility on Route 764 in Duncansville will close in early May,” the spokesperson said. “Team members at the facility were notified several months in advance, and certain employees will be offered other roles within the company.”
The company added that customers who regularly drop off packages at the affected locations will still have access to nearby alternatives. Those options can be found on the company’s website.
FedEx emphasized that decisions like this are difficult but said the company is working to support impacted workers through job placement assistance, relocation opportunities, or severance packages where appropriate.
According to FedEx, the “Network 2.0” initiative is designed to modernize its logistics operations by improving package pickup, transportation, and delivery throughout the United States and Canada. The company says the effort will create a more efficient delivery network while increasing technology integration and improving service for both customers and employees.
At this time, FedEx has not released how many employees at the Duncansville and State College facilities may be affected by the closures.
