Johnstown Christian Students Pack Hope for Bangladesh |
From Latrobe to the Bay of Bengal, students unite in service to feed families hit by natural disasters. |
Nearly 250 students at Johnstown Christian School turned their gymnasium into a hub of compassion, spending two hours preparing meal packets for families in Bangladesh—where frequent natural disasters such as cyclones and floods leave many in need of food assistance. “They just went through a cyclone, and now they’re in desperate need of food again,” said Patti Miller, a preschool teacher and leader of the project. Working side by side in assembly lines, students scooped, measured, and sealed meal packets designed to nourish families abroad. As they worked, they cheerfully called out the ingredients—protein, vegetables, vitamins, and rice—ensuring each package contained essential nutrients. “It has 11 essential vitamins in it so kids in other countries get everything they need in one meal,” Miller explained. Each packet was weighed precisely, sealed, and boxed for shipment. The goal: create 10,000 meals. But the project served more than one purpose. It also acted as the school’s annual spring fundraiser, which helps provide scholarships for students. The school’s mission-driven efforts raise roughly $90,000 per year, according to Miller, with up to 85% of students relying on financial aid. The event brought together students of all ages—from kindergartners to seniors—working toward a shared purpose. For some, it offered a lesson in leadership and kindness. “Just to be a better person, I guess,” said sophomore Dijon Coleman. “It’s nice to be the older one and a role model.” At the project’s close, the school community gathered around the packed boxes to pray before sending them off—a gesture Miller said symbolizes unity and gratitude. “It’s something we truly appreciate doing,” she said. “It reminds us of grace and brings the whole school together.” |
