Hundreds of motorcyclists honor veterans and celebrate America’s 250th anniversary across Blair County |
More than 250 motorcyclists rolled through Blair County on Saturday as part of the Freedom Ride, an event marking the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary. The ride began at the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, where participants gathered for opening remarks before setting out. Organizers chose the location to ensure residents could share in the celebration. Freedom Ride Co-Chair Jim Patterson expressed enthusiasm for the turnout, noting the strong sense of patriotism among riders. He described motorcycling as a symbol of freedom and said the event captured that spirit. Co-Chair Chrissy Dambeck emphasized the importance of including veterans, saying the setting allowed them to hear and experience the excitement firsthand. From Hollidaysburg, riders traveled through the borough and made stops at the VA Medical Center and downtown Altoona. Along the route, community members waved and showed support, reinforcing the event’s focus on unity and national pride. Participant David Ervine said the ride represented more than a shared interest in motorcycles. He pointed to the collaboration among motorcycle groups, local organizations, and residents as a sign of enduring pride in the country. After completing the Blair County route, roughly 280 riders gathered at Fort Roberdeau, where they took time to rest and explore the historic site. The day concluded in Altoona with a concert and fireworks display at PNG Field, bringing the celebration to a festive close. |
