Massive ‘Big Boy’ Steam Engine Visit Prompts Road Restrictions Across Region |
PennDOT urges caution as thousands are expected to gather in Central and Western Pennsylvania |
PennDOT is preparing for increased traffic and safety concerns as the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, Union Pacific “Big Boy” No. 4014, travels through Central and Western Pennsylvania in July 2026. Drivers in Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Fulton, Huntingdon, and Somerset counties are advised to remain alert and plan ahead if they intend to view the historic train. PennDOT is coordinating with local officials and emergency management teams to manage traffic and ensure public safety throughout the region. To reduce congestion and prevent unsafe roadside viewing, message boards and traffic cones will be placed in key locations along high-volume roadways. These include areas such as the I-99 interchange in Tyrone and U.S. Route 22 in Blair County, where shoulder parking will be restricted. Digital message boards will also notify drivers of temporary road closures tied to permitted events. One major closure includes the Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark, where Route 4008 (Veterans Memorial Highway) will be closed to all traffic except those with VIP access during a scheduled event. Additional closures may be announced as event dates approach. PennDOT is encouraging visitors to follow several important safety guidelines:
The Big Boy locomotive is scheduled to appear at the Railroaders Memorial Museum on July 8. |
