Explore game warden training and the Ross Leffler School of Conservation

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is actively seeking individuals passionate about wildlife conservation to join its ranks as State Game Wardens. These officers play a crucial role in enforcing wildlife laws, managing habitats, and engaging with the community to promote responsible outdoor activities.

Prospective candidates must meet specific qualifications, including a high school diploma and a valid driver's license. Ideal applicants exhibit a strong commitment to wildlife, possess the ability to perform law enforcement duties, and demonstrate flexibility in work hours and conditions. The selection process is competitive, emphasizing both physical fitness and academic proficiency.

Training for new wardens is conducted at the Ross Leffler School of Conservation, established in 1932 as the nation's first conservation officer training facility. The program spans approximately 44 weeks, combining classroom instruction with field assignments to equip cadets with comprehensive skills in wildlife management, law enforcement, and public relations. Cadets receive bi-weekly compensation and are provided with lodging, meals, and equipment during their training period.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are assigned to districts across Pennsylvania, including opportunities in Blair County. These assignments involve enforcing wildlife regulations, conducting educational programs, and collaborating with local communities to preserve Pennsylvania's rich natural heritage.

The application window for the upcoming class is open from January 12 to February 28, 2026. Interested individuals are encouraged to apply promptly and can find more information on the Pennsylvania Game Commission's official website. This career path offers a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact on wildlife conservation and to serve the public in a meaningful capacity.
