Flag Day is coming up.

Core Symbolism

National Unity: Unlike Independence Day, which celebrates freedom from British rule, Flag Day explicitly celebrates the birth of the primary symbol that binds the states together.

The Stripes: The 13 horizontal stripes symbolize the original colonies that declared independence.

The Stars: The 50 stars represent the collective strength of the 50 individual sovereign states.

The Colors: According to military tradition, red represents valor and bravery; white represents purity and innocence; blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

Pennsylvania is the only state that observes it as an official state holiday.

AFSCME Local 3157 members at Blair County Prison have approved a strong three-year contract, securing notable pay raises, extra holidays, and new benefits designed to attract and retain correctional officers and staff.

This agreement, achieved through active and united negotiations, reflects the union’s ongoing push to strengthen its ranks and enhance working conditions.

Veteran Sergeant Chad Murray called the deal a significant step forward, predicting the improved pay and vacation time will boost morale and help recruit new officers.

Negotiating team member Frank Irvin emphasized the power of member involvement in ensuring staff concerns reached management directly, leading to more realistic solutions.

Officers like Dennis Bishop reinforced the view that correctional staff play a critical yet often overlooked role in law enforcement, working tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the community safe.

🦸 Local Heroes

Central PA Humane Society Shelter Pets Find Reading Buddies

Our local heroes come in all sizes, and this week, the spotlight is on our wonderful local children and the gentle shelter animals of the Central PA Humane Society! Through a heartwarming partnership with the Hollidaysburg Area Public Library, young readers have been stepping up to sit with, comfort, and read aloud to adoptable pets. This wonderful "Paws to Read" initiative gives children a patient, non-judgmental audience to practice their literacy skills while providing much-needed socialization, love, and comfort to animals waiting for their forever homes.

📚 Local Causes

Unearthing a Love for Learning with Summer Quest 2026

With school out for the season, local educators and libraries are launching a massive, coordinated effort to keep our kids' minds sharp and combat the "summer slide." Both the Altoona Area Public Library and the Hollidaysburg Area Public Library have officially unrolled their 2026 Summer Quest programs under the exciting theme, "Unearthing a Love for Learning" (and a fun focus on history and dinosaurs!). From sensory play days to "Book Bucks" rewards that kids can cash in for prizes, this initiative is a massive, free resource to keep local families connected, reading, and learning all summer long.

  • Key Details: Registration is officially open at both locations! Altoona's programming officially kicks off with an incredible, free "Air Weaver Big Balloon Show" on Friday, June 12, at 6:00 PM in the Altoona Area High School auditorium.
