Blaze on the Ice: Altoona Welcomes New Semi-Pro Hockey Team |
Altoona Inferno set to ignite local sports scene with inaugural season this fall |
A new chapter in Central Pennsylvania sports is about to begin as the Altoona Inferno prepares to hit the ice this fall at Galactic Ice Arena. The team will compete in the American Premier Hockey League (APHL), bringing semi-professional hockey to Altoona for the first time. For local fans, the arrival of the Inferno signals an exciting opportunity to experience a higher level of competition close to home. The team’s inaugural season aims to deliver fast-paced action while building a strong connection with the community. The APHL is classified as a “Senior A” league, one of the top tiers of amateur adult hockey in the United States. It features a mix of talented players, including former high school and college standouts, as well as athletes with experience in minor professional leagues such as the ECHL, SPHL, and FPHL. League organizers emphasize both competitive play and community engagement, and the APHL has historically served as a stepping stone for players pursuing opportunities at higher levels, including pathways linked to the NHL. The Altoona Inferno was founded by Kevin and Cadence Diehl, a father-daughter team committed to growing the sport locally. Team captain Garrett Rupert, a defenseman, expressed his enthusiasm, noting that Altoona has never had this level of hockey before and that the team is excited to give the community something new to rally behind. Competing in the league’s western conference, the Inferno’s season will run from September through April. Beyond entertainment, the team also hopes to provide local athletes with a chance to continue playing competitively after their high school or college careers, while building a dedicated hometown fan base. Tryouts for the Altoona Inferno are scheduled for June 6 and June 13 as the team gears up for its debut season.
