Blimp in the Sky: Goodyear Airship Turns Heads Across Central Pennsylvania |
Unexpected flyover sparks curiosity as iconic aircraft heads to major golf event |
If you happened to glance skyward Tuesday afternoon, you might have spotted a rare sight drifting over Central Pennsylvania—the Goodyear blimp. Residents across the region, including Altoona, quickly took to social media to share photos and videos of the airship gliding overhead. For many, it was a first-time experience. Altoona resident Tracey Stoltz reported seeing the blimp near the Juniata Gap area just after 1 p.m. on May 12. The unusual sight left many asking the same question: why was it here? According to Goodyear, the blimp was en route to the PGA Championship in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, where it is scheduled to appear from May 14 through May 17. Goodyear operates a fleet of four blimps worldwide, including three based in the United States and one in Germany. The Ohio-based airship frequently covers sporting events and festivals throughout the region.
After its appearance at the PGA Championship, the blimp is scheduled to head south for its next stop: the Rock the Country Festival in Georgia, beginning May 29. For now, those who caught a glimpse over Central Pennsylvania can say they witnessed a piece of aviation history floating quietly overhead. |
