Pennsylvania is under a statewide disaster emergency proclamation, signed by Governor Josh Shapiro, as a major winter storm approaches.

The declaration mobilizes key agencies like PEMA and PennDOT, ensuring state resources are ready to assist local communities.

Central Pennsylvania is expected to be hit hard, with forecasts calling for about a foot of snow beginning Sunday and continuing into Monday.

A severe Tier 4 vehicle restriction has been implemented on all interstates to prevent accidents and keep roads clear for emergency responders.

With temperatures predicted to stay below freezing all week, the danger of icy conditions will persist long after the snow stops.

Officials are strongly urging residents across the Midstate to stay off the roads for their own safety and to allow emergency crews to operate effectively.

An incredible outpouring of local support made it all possible.

More than 32 area businesses, churches, schools, and civic groups contributed crucial donations and supplies.

A dedicated team of 48 volunteers also donated a combined 101 hours to sort and pack the winter gear for distribution.

It’s an exciting time to be a neighbor in Blair County! We’ve had a busy start to 2026, with local entrepreneurs planting new roots and long-time favorites finding fresh spaces. From the bustling streets of Altoona to the scenic riverfront in Tyrone, there’s a real sense of "rebirth" in the air this month.

Here are a least three spots that have everyone talking lately. Grab your calendar—you’re going to want to make some room for these visits!

The Athenian Café: A Fresh Start in a New Spot

  • Location: Moving to a new, larger location in Altoona (formerly at 217 Union Avenue)

  • Opening: Late January 2026

  • The Story: If you’ve ever had a craving for the most authentic gyro in Central PA, you know the Theos family. After years of serving us at their Union Avenue location, they’ve officially spent the last few weeks packing up the pita and tzatziki for a big move. The new location offers more space and, excitingly, a new liquor license so you can pair that Moussaka with a glass of wine or a cold beer.

  • Owner’s Note: While the family is keeping the exact new address a slight mystery until the grand "re-cutting" of the ribbon, they shared on social media that this move is all about growth. "We want to let our family serve your family in a space that feels like home," they shared. They even went the extra mile by helping their former landlord find a new tenant to ensure the old neighborhood stays vibrant—that’s the Blair County spirit!

  • How to Support: Keep a close eye on their Facebook page or website for the official "Doors Open" announcement. Once they’re back, stop in for their famous lamb gyro platter.

Tyrone City Brewing: Preserving History, One Pint at a Time

  • Location: 10 Logan Avenue, Tyrone (The former Moose Lodge)

  • Opening: Recently expanded sales/New walk-in cooler service in January 2026

  • The Story: Stephen and Wendy Grot are no strangers to investing in Tyrone (you likely know them from Ion Power or the Wilson House B&B), but their latest venture is literally putting the "cheers" back into downtown. They’ve transformed the 1927 Moose Lodge into the town’s very first microbrewery. This isn't just a new business; it’s an homage to the original Tyrone City Brewing Co. from 1851. They recently began canning their Hazy Pale Ale and Light Lager, and this month marks the launch of their on-site walk-in cooler sales.

  • Owner’s Note: Stephen Grot is passionate about the "Little J" riverfront. "We want to see the downtown as a nice place to live, work, and play," he says. "The brewery is a catalyst for revitalization, creating a new gathering place for both locals and visitors."

  • How to Support: You can buy cases and six-packs directly at the brewery or online. Look for their "Hazy Pale Ale" at the Tyrone Elks and other local taprooms. Check TyroneCityBrewing.com for updated hours.

Yerty Auto Service: A Major Expansion on Chestnut Avenue

  • Location: 301-331 Chestnut Avenue, Altoona

  • Opening: Renovation phase/Partial opening throughout January 2026

  • The Story: Talk about a "level up!" Yerty Auto Service, a staple in Roaring Spring since 1948, has officially outgrown its old boots. Thanks to a recent PIDA loan and support from the ABCD Corporation, they’ve taken over the massive 126,000-square-foot facility formerly home to Lumax Industries. This month, you’ll see plenty of activity as they renovate the space to include a new roof, modern HVAC, and an upgraded employee lounge. It’s a massive win for Altoona, bringing 10 new full-time jobs and keeping 22 more right here in the county.

  • Why It’s Special: It’s a classic example of a "legacy" family business evolving. By moving into a vacant industrial spot, they are breathing life back into a building that was once a manufacturing powerhouse.

  • How to Support: If you need recycled, high-quality auto parts or service, give them a call at (814) 224-5151 or visit yertyautoservice.com.
