Blair and Centre counties are receiving critical state funding to combat a growing hunger crisis.
Local organizations are among the beneficiaries of a $4.1 million grant program from the Department of Environmental Protection designed to fight food insecurity.
The support comes as food needs escalate, with one in seven Blair County residents considered food insecure and Centre County seeing a sharp 12.8% surge.
Confirmed recipients include the Central PA Food Bank, the Tyrone food bank, and Faith Centre Inc. in Bellefonte.
This crucial funding will help them purchase refrigerators, freezers, and transport vehicles to rescue surplus food.
The investment provides a direct lifeline, ensuring that fresh, wholesome food reaches local dinner tables instead of ending up in landfills, tackling both hunger and environmental waste. Read More... |
Roughly 220 band students from Blair County’s junior and senior high schools came together at Tyrone Area High School for a landmark two-day festival, closing with a joint concert on Thursday evening.
David Hock, Tyrone’s band director, called the first-ever combined festival a success, highlighting that merging junior and senior bands streamlined planning and increased participation.
Organizers and the local PMEA chapter may continue this approach, as it proved convenient for students and directors alike.
During rehearsals, guest conductors James Colonna and Travis Weller inspired students by focusing on their dedication and teamwork.
Participants, including flute player Alivia Barto-Taylor and oboist Camden Black, enjoyed connecting with peers and playing pieces like “Byzantine Dances.”
Directors such as Bethany Danella and Deanna Herb emphasized that these experiences build confidence, forge friendships, and strengthen music programs across the county. Read More... |
Blair County commissioners have approved the final phase of courthouse roof repairs, investing $345,000 to address ongoing water leaks in the building’s modern extension.
The contract with David M. Maines Associates Inc. will focus on problematic flat roof areas identified by thermal imaging surveys.
Earlier project phases targeted the courthouse’s historic core, bringing total restoration costs to about $1.3 million.
This stage will see a new rubberized undercoating, lightning protection, and anti-slip pads installed — all covered by a 30-year warranty.
Director Nick Burket emphasized that repairs are necessary after leaks damaged equipment and disrupted work in several key offices.
Commissioner Laura Burke expects completion by late 2026 with minimal disruptions.
Courthouse staff and the community look forward to a more secure, weatherproof historic landmark. Read More... |

Fresh Starts and Familiar Faces: New Small Business Openings in Blair County
Hello, neighbors! There is something truly special about a crisp morning in Blair County, especially when there’s a new "Open" sign hanging in a storefront window. This month, we have some exciting growth to celebrate, from a massive expansion for a family-owned staple to a new chapter for an iconic downtown location. Here is the latest scoop on the businesses moving into our neighborhood this winter. Yerty Auto Service – Altoona ExpansionLocation: 301-331 Chestnut Avenue, Altoona, PA Opening Date: Early 2026 (Facility acquisition and renovation ongoing) If you’ve lived in the Cove, you likely know the Yerty name. For years, Yerty Auto Service has been a trusted fixture in Roaring Spring, but they’ve officially outgrown their boots! The company is making a major move into Altoona, taking over a massive 126,000-square-foot industrial facility on Chestnut Avenue. This isn't just a simple garage; it's a full-scale operation that will house everything from vehicle dismantling and production to quality control and shipping. Owner Josh Yerty and his team chose this specific Altoona site because it allows them to keep their roots in Blair County while finally having the "elbow room" to meet increasing demand. "We’ve simply outgrown our existing facility," Josh shared during the expansion planning. "A larger operating space is paramount to our continued success, and this location provides the workflow we need to serve our customers better than ever." It’s a huge win for the city, bringing new life to a large industrial space and keeping local jobs right here at home. How to Support: While they transition into the new space, you can still find them for all your automotive needs. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for the official ribbon-cutting date at the Chestnut Avenue location! Giant Eagle Pharmacy (Former Rite Aid) – HollidaysburgLocation: 300 Blair Street, Hollidaysburg, PA Opening Date: Recently opened; fully operational as of January 2026 When the local Rite Aid closed its doors, many of us in Hollidaysburg were worried about where to get our prescriptions filled without a long drive. Enter Giant Eagle, which stepped in to transform the former pharmacy into a standalone location. While the retail side of the store is still being stocked with your favorite snacks and home goods, the pharmacy counter is officially open for business and ready to greet you with familiar faces. Dan Donovan, a spokesperson for Giant Eagle, noted that the transition was designed with the community's peace of mind as the top priority. "We wanted to ensure Rite Aid customers didn't have to do anything—their scripts were seamlessly transferred so there was no gap in care," he explained. By hiring many of the former Rite Aid staff, they’ve ensured that when you walk in, you’re still being helped by the neighbors you know and trust. It’s a great example of a larger company stepping in to fill a vital community need. How to Support: The pharmacy is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM, and Saturday/Sunday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Stop in to welcome the staff and check out the new retail items as they hit the shelves! Coming Soon: Neuro S.P.A.C.E. ABALocation: Serving Altoona and surrounding Blair County Opening Date: Training begins February 2026; full services launching shortly after We are also welcoming a vital new service provider to the area this February. Neuro S.P.A.C.E. ABA is expanding its reach into Blair County to provide Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) services. This organization focuses on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) for children and individuals with developmental needs, filling a significant gap in local specialized care options. The team at Neuro S.P.A.C.E. chose to expand into Blair County specifically to provide in-home and community-based support that allows families to receive care in a comfortable, familiar environment. Their focus is on "empowering through connection," and they are currently building their local team of technicians to ensure every family on their waitlist can be served. It’s a heartwarming addition to our local healthcare landscape that prioritizes the well-being of our youngest neighbors. How to Support: If you know a family in need of ABA services or someone looking for a rewarding career in behavioral health, check out their website at neurospaceaba.com for enrollment and employment information. |
Two exceptional leaders from Penn State Altoona are earning high praise, as a distinguished faculty member and a dedicated student were named 2026 WISE honorees.

Mr. Sad Eyes is a 3 year old male. He is 58 Ibs. He is a Shepherd mix. He needs time to warm up to new people so children should be old enough to understand he needs time and space. He cannot live with cats. He is dog selective but would probably do best as the only dog. He would require at least two visits if interested.

Adoption fees are listed on the application. An application must be filled out in order to visit with any dog or cat. They can be found on our website www.centralpahumane.org under the Adopt A Pet tab or at the shelter. Our animals are posted on Facebook and Petfinder when time permits. A Petfinder inquiry is not an application, and they may not be responded to. We can only accept so many applications for each animal.
