Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity has returned more than $160,000 in unclaimed property to 17 Blair County employers during the Blair County CareerLink’s Spring Job Fair at the Jaffa Shrine Center in Altoona.
Employers were surprised with this unexpected financial benefit as the Treasury’s team helped reconnect them with assets like dormant accounts and uncashed checks.
Major recipients included Penn Highlands, Conemaugh Health, First Commonwealth Bank, and the City of Altoona.
The Treasury’s ongoing outreach aims to return over $5 billion statewide, with almost $19 million owed to Blair County alone.
Garrity stressed that anyone—residents, organizations, schools, and businesses—could have property waiting and encouraged regular searches through the Treasury website.
More than one in ten Pennsylvanians are owed unclaimed property, averaging more than $1,000 per claim, making this a critical local and statewide effort. Read More... |
Drivers in Blair County should anticipate a temporary closure of Route 4023 (Tipton Road) due to upcoming railroad crossing repairs in Tipton.
PennDOT and Norfolk Southern Railroad will be collaborating on this essential maintenance, which is expected to last two to three days between April 27 and May 1, 2026.
Exact dates for the project have yet to be finalized because work depends on scheduling, equipment readiness, and weather conditions.
During repairs, motorists will need to use BUS US 220/Old US 220 East Pleasant Valley Boulevard and Route 4025 (Grazierville Road) as detour routes.
Travelers are encouraged to plan ahead and check real-time updates with the 511PA service, which provides up-to-the-minute traffic alerts and weather information.
Safe driving is crucial near construction zones; slow down, eliminate distractions, and follow all posted signage for a smooth commute. Read More... |

Tropical Smoothie Cafe in AltoonaIf you’re craving something bright, healthy, and downright refreshing after a day running errands in Park Hills, swing by the new Tropical Smoothie Cafe at 216 Park Hills Plaza, Altoona. It opened its doors in early March 2026 (with the official grand opening celebration March 27-29), and the ribbon-cutting with the Blair County Chamber had everyone smiling. This spot serves up fruit-packed smoothies, fresh wraps, sandwiches, and bowls—perfect for a quick lunch, post-workout boost, or family treat. It’s a franchise with that welcoming vibe, and locals have already been popping in since opening day for the vibrant menu that feels like a little tropical escape in the middle of Pennsylvania. Residents are raving about the convenient location and friendly team. You can order online for pickup or delivery to make it even easier. They’re typically open starting around 7 a.m. most days—check their Facebook (@tscAltoonaPA) or the Tropical Smoothie Cafe app/site for current hours and any specials. Support them by grabbing a smoothie (maybe treat the family) and spreading the word—every visit helps keep tasty, healthier options thriving right here at home. SpeedPro Central PA in BellwoodBig graphics, fast turnaround, and local know-how just got a whole lot closer with SpeedPro Central PA now open at 526 North 4th Street in Bellwood. They started welcoming customers in mid-March 2026 and held their grand opening event on April 13, complete with print demos, refreshments, and a raffle that had the community buzzing. This studio specializes in large-format printing—think banners, signs, vehicle wraps, window graphics, office branding, and more. Whether you’re a local business owner needing eye-catching signage or a resident planning an event, they offer fast, affordable, high-quality work with that personal Central PA touch. They serve folks across Blair, Bedford, Centre, and surrounding counties from their Bellwood base. Owner Jake (and the team) chose the area to bring professional graphics services closer to home for small businesses and organizations that don’t want to drive far or deal with big-city pricing and wait times. What makes them special is the combination of cutting-edge equipment (like EFI and HP printers) and that neighborly consultation style— they’re here to help Blair County businesses and folks look their best. Hours are Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–5 p.m. (closed weekends). Reach them at their site (speedpro.com/central-pa) or give a call for a quote. The best way to support? Send your next printing project their way, tag them on social when you see their work around town, and stop by to say hi. Local services like this keep our dollars and talent right here strengthening the community. A quick note on a couple others making waves: Terrascape Supply settled into its new sales showroom along Woodbury Pike (Routes 164/36) in Freedom Township/East Freedom, stocking landscape supplies, hardscapes, fire pits, and more for homeowners and contractors—great for sprucing up those yards as spring rolls in. |

If you apply to adopt, please let the Humane Society know that you saw the listing in The Blair Buzz Newsletter!
Here is Buddy the Elf.
Buddy the Elf, what's your favorite color?
This is now his second time at the shelter. He was returned through no fault of his own. He is still just as sweet and loving as ever. He is 5 years old. He is short-haired. He originally came in with a nasty eye infection and a bit of a cold. He has since gotten better but the vet thinks it may be chronic. He may be sick on and off for the rest of his life-but it did seem to get better when he was in his last home! He can live with kids, cats and dogs. ** Buddy the Elf is in our care in Altoona PA. Each cat gets microchipped, spayed/neutered, snap FIV/FeLV combo tested and vaccinated. (We DO NOT declaw). The adoption fee covers those costs. Adoption fees are listed on the applications. In person applications take priority over ones mailed or emailed (especially on a popular animal). An application must be filled out first in order to visit with any cat. Applications can be found on our website www.centralpahumane.org or at the shelter. A Petfinder inquiry is NOT an application, and they may not be responded to. We can only accept so many applications for each animal. We do adopt out of state but we do not transport and we cannot hold the animal. ** Applications can be emailed to cattery@centralpahumane.org
Please give Buddy the forever home he deserves! |
