The Blair County Food Drive is kicking off its spring campaign at Sam’s Club in Altoona from Friday, March 27 through Saturday, April 4.

Led by founder Denice Stone, the event rallies around 500 volunteers and continued strong community support since last fall.

Residents are encouraged to donate nonperishable goods, purchase and drop off extra groceries on-site, or use the quick drive-up service where volunteers help unload donations.

All contributions benefit 14 local nonprofits, targeting efforts like food banks and after-school programs.

The week features special guests, from Penn State athletes and Miss Central Pennsylvania to the Easter Bunny, plus a highly anticipated WTAJ Day where attendees can meet the news team and get a first look at the new Studio 814 host.

Community involvement is vital as demands on local food organizations rise, with Stone emphasizing every donation’s impact.

For many entrepreneurs in Blair County, a frustrating truth persists.

Money poured into massive online ad platforms often fails to reach the right people, instead targeting users hundreds of miles away.

Meanwhile, a family right here in Altoona might be searching for a product you offer, completely unaware your business even exists.

This is the fundamental disconnect of modern marketing for small businesses.

A shift toward hyper-local advertising is changing the game by focusing on connecting with neighbors.

This strategy engages households in the immediate community—the very people who become loyal customers and genuinely want to support local.

Your next loyal customer isn't in another time zone; they're right here.

Focusing on neighborhood marketing is more than just a tactic; it's an investment in the vitality of the Pennsylvania local economy.

SpeedPro of Central PA (Bellwood)

Bellwood just got a fresh splash of color with the opening of SpeedPro of Central PA at 526 N. Fourth St., Ste. 1. This new studio specializes in large-format printing and graphics — think vehicle wraps, storefront signage, trade show displays, wall murals, and more, all geared toward helping local businesses stand out. Owners Sara and Jake Bilthuis are locals who chose to plant their business right here in Blair County, with SpeedPro now open and a grand opening celebration set for 11:30 a.m. on April 13.[altoonamirror]

The Bilthuis family’s goal is to give small and mid-sized businesses in our region access to the kind of polished, professional branding you usually only see in big metro areas. While the paper doesn’t quote them directly, their launch focuses heavily on serving local entrepreneurs, community organizations, and schools that need eye-catching visuals without having to leave the county to get them. What makes this especially helpful for Blair County is the combination of national-level technology with owners who actually live here, understand our market, and can work with you one-on-one on a custom project instead of forcing you into a one-size-fits-all template.[altoonamirror]

If you want to support them, consider getting your next banner, event signage, or company vehicle graphics done locally instead of online. You can stop by the studio at 526 N. Fourth St. in Bellwood and join their official grand opening on April 13 to tour the facility and check out samples, activities, and refreshments. Local business owners and community members are invited, so it’s a great excuse to network and say hello.[altoonamirror]

Blair County Genealogical Society – New Building Addition (Hollidaysburg)

While not a brand-new business, the Blair County Genealogical Society is celebrating a major expansion that feels like a “new chapter” for local history buffs. The society, headquartered at 431 Scotch Valley Road in Hollidaysburg, is hosting a ribbon-cutting and grand opening celebration for its new building addition at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 27. This addition gives them more room for research materials, programs, and community activities, all focused on preserving and sharing Blair County’s rich family and local history.[altoonamirror]

Leaders at the society say the expansion marks an important milestone in their mission to make genealogy and local history more accessible to residents. While the article doesn’t print a direct quote, the emphasis is clearly on serving the community: more space for records, more room for programs, and more chances for neighbors to dig into their roots without having to travel to big-city archives. It’s the kind of quiet but powerful investment that keeps our shared stories alive and gives folks a place to connect with their Blair County heritage.[altoonamirror]

Residents can support the society by attending the ribbon cutting, touring the new addition, and learning about membership or volunteer opportunities. The public is invited, and light refreshments will be served, making it an easy, low-pressure way to stop in and see what resources are available if you’ve ever wondered about your family’s past here in Blair County.[altoonamirror]

Lisa Surkovich, an assistant teaching professor of literary education at Penn State Altoona, was named the Education honoree for her exceptional leadership and innovation. She spent 38 years as a public-school teacher and reading specialist — 31 of them with the Hollidaysburg Area School District — before joining Penn State Altoona. Nursing student Emma Peterman was selected as the WISE 2026 Rising Star Tribute for her work as a UPMC Altoona patient care technician and as president of Penn State Altoona's chapter of the Student Nurses Association of Pennsylvania. 🤖 Claysburg-Kimmel LEGO League Robots Their Way to an Award

These kids are seriously impressive! The Claysburg-Kimmel FIRST LEGO League team was recognized by their school board after earning the best robot design award at a recent regional competition. Students created a handmade LEGO trophy and introduced their winning robot, S.C.A.R. — short for Smooth, Careful Artifact Rescue — which reflects this year's archaeology-themed challenge. The team scored 210 points during one of the robot's mission rounds and placed 15th overall. Young engineers in action — Blair County style!

💛 LOCAL HEROES

People going above and beyond for others

🤡❤️ Tyrone's Beloved Teacher-Clown Fights Rare Disease — Community Rallies

This one will pull at your heartstrings. The Tyrone community is rallying to support Jonathan Holmes, a local teacher and Shriner's clown, following his diagnosis with POEMS, a rare blood disease where abnormal plasma cells produce excessive protein. Though treatable, the diagnosis has required Holmes to step away from his position at the Tyrone Area School District and his role as a community performer. Fundraiser organizer Laurie Isenberg noted the overwhelming community response, saying there are "so many wonderful things taking place to help a teacher and a family that is so loved by many and has supported so many people in the community." Jonathan — known in his clown persona as Darby — has given so much of himself to this community. Now it's our turn to give back.

Issues and initiatives that matter to our community

🚒 Pinecroft Volunteer Fire Company Fighting to Keep Its Identity

This is a story worth paying attention to, especially if you live in Antis Township. Blair County Judge Lou Schmitt granted a preliminary injunction to the Pinecroft Volunteer Fire Company against a decertification that had been scheduled by Antis Township supervisors, who have been pushing for a merger with Excelsior Fire Department No. 1 of Bellwood. A hearing on the matter was set for March 26. The proposed merger stems from a 2020 state study that highlighted the need for Antis Township to transition to a single fire department model, in part because Pinecroft operates with only three to eight available firefighters. Community members are keeping a close eye on developments — stay tuned for updates.

Here is Culter.

Culter is an 8 month old male. He is a Hound mix. He takes a moment to warm up to new people but treats help!! He can live with kids. He will flourish in a home with another dog. He would likely chase a cat. He has not really been socialized so he might need help once in a new home.

Application:Dog Adoption Application

** Culter is in our care in Altoona PA. He is available for adoption.

Each animal gets microchipped, spayed/neutered, 4DX tested (if over 6 months of age), flea treated, and vaccinated. The adoption fee covers those costs. Adoption fees are listed on the application.

An application must be filled out in order to visit with any dog or cat.

Applications are also available at the shelter. Our animals are posted on Facebook and Petfinder - only when time permits. A Petfinder inquiry is not an application, and they may not be responded to. We can only accept so many applications for each animal. We do adopt out of state, but we cannot hold the animal. **

PA Kennel License #1333.

Please give Culter the forever home he deserves!
